What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a fairly common problem with women and occurs when tissue similar to the uterus lining grows outside the uterus. In most cases, endometriosis is found in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, outer surface of the uterus, and muscles that support the uterus.

Other sites for endometriosis growth can include the vagina, cervix, bladder, or rectum. While the tissue is non-cancerous, it can lead to scarring and adhesions and trap blood, resulting in the formation of cysts. The human body typically expels these tissues during menstruation, but at times, some tissue may remain in the body and cause inflammation.

Who Is at Higher Risk?

While any menstruating female patient may develop endometriosis symptoms, the condition is more common in women between 30 and 40 years of age. Some other high-risk groups include women who:

• Have a family history of endometriosis
• Have lengthy menstrual cycles

Signs and Symptoms of Endometriosis

The most common signs of endometriosis could include:

Pain

The patient may experience severe menstrual cramps, chronic pain in the lower back, intestinal pain, pain after sexual intercourse, or painful bowel movement. Uncommon symptoms of endometriosis may include blood in the stools or urine.

Bleeding or Spotting

The patient may experience intermittent bleeding between menstrual cycles.

Infertility

Endometriosis can lead to difficulties or delay in getting pregnant.

Stomach Upsets

You may experience cramps, bloating, diarrhea or constipation, especially during periods.
